Papers, 1798-1880.

Business papers of Sylvanus Keith and family correspondence of Carry Keith. Business papers document trade between Providence (R.I.), New York City, and Charleston (S.C.), including a partnership contract and letters between Sylvanus and Seth Lathrop, his half brother, describing damage caused by hurricanes in Charleston, 1804-1810; documents relating to the ship Saluda; problems of debtors; and the effect on business of the strained relations of the United States and Britain, 1807-1808. Family correspondence of Cary Keith concerns social life and customs of Charleston, S.C., and letters from other relatives, including Sylvanus' daughter Carolina Keith Coy and niece Olive Keith. One letter, 1880, from Ida Tillson, describes an American mission school in Japan.
